Why you need to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race

Have you ever watched an episode of America’s Next Top Model or Project Runway and thought ‘You know what this needs? More glitter!’. Yes? Then you’re in luck. This month the global phenomenon that is RuPaul’s Drag Race comes sashaying back onto our screens. If you have no idea what RuPaul’s Drag Race is then let me explain.

What is RuPaul’s Drag Race?

RuPaul's Drag Race
Hosted by legendary US drag queen RuPaul, the show follows thirteen hopeful drag queens.
They are competing to win the coveted title of ‘America’s Next Drag Superstar.’ Each week, the queens face a series of challenges. These challenges range from fashion design to acting and everything in between. Finally, they face RuPaul’s judging panel where one is eliminated. I know, it sounds like the standard TV talent show setup, but trust me. This show is unlike any reality show that you’ve seen before.

More than just bad lip-syncing

When you think of drag queens, what usually comes to mind is lip syncing and bad celebrity impersonations. While the show is not short of all that, it has so much more to offer. Each week welcomes a newly themed design challenge. These challenges allow the queens to test their skills and exhibit their own unique style of drag. Past themes included ‘Hello Kitty’, ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘The RuPocalypse’. It’s safe to say that there have been some unforgettable costumes since the show first aired in 2009.

The level of creativity is absolutely through the roof. In terms of makeup and costume design and each season seems to get better than the last. As well as the visual aspects, it’s the personalities of the queens that really bring the show to life. Put thirteen drag queens in a room together and watch the entertainment unfold. You get reluctant teamwork, quick-witted insults and whole load of hilarious challenges.

Drastic times calls for dragtastic measures

RuPaul’s Drag Race is a show that you’ll need to see to believe. As well as being fantastically entertaining, it also gives an interesting insight into the LGBT community and the world of drag. All the while, it’s promoting a positive message of creativity and self-love. Season 9 is set to debut on VH1 in the US on Friday 24 March. There has been no word yet on when the show will air in the UK and Ireland.
Trailers have been released and it looks like we’re in for another explosive season with more glamour than ever. You can also expect celebrities like Graham Norton and Lady Gaga to join the panel as guest judges. If you’re not a fan of reality TV then you may think this show isn’t for you but give it a chance and you will not be disappointed.
